Sept 4: Prompt: Write about something you’ve always been curious about.

     Something I have always been curious about is space and what could exist beyond what we can see. I think it is interesting to wonder about other planets, galaxies, and whether there is more to the universe than we currently understand.

    On Friday, we worked on revising and finishing our paragraphs. We also learned about things that can cause us to lose points in a paragraph.

    I learned that revising is important because small mistakes or missing parts of a paragraph can affect the overall quality of an argument.

       A time when I tried to persuade someone to do something I wanted was when I tried to get my mother to purchase something for me. I used ethos by reminding her that I had been responsible and productive throughout the week. I used pathos by explaining how the purchase would make me extremely excited and happy. I used logos by giving logical reasons why it was worth the money, like saying there was a sale and how often I would use the item. Logos was the most effective because giving reasonable evidence made my request seem more responsible rather than just asking for money. August 19th Prompt: How has living in or around Atlanta influenced the way you see your community, culture, or identity? If you were speaking to someone unfamiliar with Atlanta, what would you want them to understand about your community?

    Living around Atlanta has influenced me into seeing my community as more diverse and connected. Atlanta has many different cultures, backgrounds, and types of people, which has helped me understand and appreciate the differences between people.     In class Wednesday, we went in depth on breaking down a speech; looking at rhetorical appeal, rhetorical situation, and rhetorical choices. We talked about how rhetorical choice applies to specific situations, and how certain things are better to say than others depending on the audience. This helped me understand that effective communication is not just about what you say, but also how and why you say it. I can use this when analyzing speeches and when making my own arguments because I will be more aware of my audience and the choices I make.

August 24th Prompt: Describe something you will never fully understand.

       Something I will never understand is how time seems to move faster when I get older. I know time itself doesn't change, but it still feels like it moves faster as you get older. It is weird how years can pass without me realizing it.      In class, we learned how to break down prompts and identify exactly what the question is asking us to do. We practiced turning the prompt into a clear claim that directly answers the question.      This helped me understand how breaking down a prompt first can make it easier to develop a strong response.
