Some students look at a rubric only after receiving their grade, while others use it as a guide while completing the assignment. Which approach do you usually take? After reviewing the AP Lang Argument Essay rubric today, explain how you could use the rubric as a roadmap to improve your argument writing.

 I usually use the rubric while completing an assignment because it helps me understand what I need to include. After reviewing the AP Lang Argument Essay rubric, I can use it as a roadmap by checking each category as I write and making sure my argument, evidence, and commentary meet the requirements.


Today, we looked at the AP Lang Argument Essay rubric again and practiced analyzing different responses based on the rubric.


Practicing with actual responses helped me better understand what earns points and what can cause a response to lose points. I can use what I learned to improve my own argument essays.

August 19th Prompt: How has living in or around Atlanta influenced the way you see your community, culture, or identity? If you were speaking to someone unfamiliar with Atlanta, what would you want them to understand about your community?

    Living around Atlanta has influenced me into seeing my community as more diverse and connected. Atlanta has many different cultures, backgrounds, and types of people, which has helped me understand and appreciate the differences between people.     In class Wednesday, we went in depth on breaking down a speech; looking at rhetorical appeal, rhetorical situation, and rhetorical choices. We talked about how rhetorical choice applies to specific situations, and how certain things are better to say than others depending on the audience. This helped me understand that effective communication is not just about what you say, but also how and why you say it. I can use this when analyzing speeches and when making my own arguments because I will be more aware of my audience and the choices I make.

August 24th Prompt: Describe something you will never fully understand.

       Something I will never understand is how time seems to move faster when I get older. I know time itself doesn't change, but it still feels like it moves faster as you get older. It is weird how years can pass without me realizing it.      In class, we learned how to break down prompts and identify exactly what the question is asking us to do. We practiced turning the prompt into a clear claim that directly answers the question.      This helped me understand how breaking down a prompt first can make it easier to develop a strong response.
